Un cap de setmana a Vilafranca del Penedès

  • A weekend in Vilafranca del Penedès

A weekend to get the most out of Vilafranca del Penedès

Friday

To warm up

If your weekend starts on Friday and falls between April and October, you shouldn’t miss a castells rehearsal, the essence of human towers. You’ll be able to watch and get close to the teams while they practice the constructions they later attempt to repeat in public performances.

DO Penedès wines

And if it’s the off-season, you can always sit in a wine bar and sample a DO Penedès wine before supper.

Saturday

Ride around Vilafranca del Penedès

It’s time to explore the wine capital

Don’t miss the market first thing in the morning, with its many stalls filling the town centre with bright colours. Almost a thousand years old, the market is a great place to go for a stroll and shop around. And while you’re there you should take a look at the Basilica of Santa Maria and its crypt, as well as the Church of Sant Francesc and its charming cloister.

4 essential things

In its role of wine capital there are four things you just have to do in Vilafranca del Penedès. The first is to take a walk through the vineyards, with every season a different colour; second, visit a winery; third, explore or rediscover the world of wine in Catalonia at the VINSEUM; and lastly, enjoy a glass of wine in one of the wine bars.

Sunday

Bike and walk

A little bit of nature.

If you are more nature-inclined, there are eleven different routes starting in Vilafranca del Penedès, passing through the typical Penedès landscape of vineyards. Or you can hop on a bike and enjoy the Penedès 360 slow or the Wine Walk. The best way to work up an appetite.

Gastronomy

It’s time for a bite to eat.

Lunches and suppers are a great opportunity to discover the town’s gastronomic culture, characterised by local produce and with the emphasis on seasonal vegetables, Penedès black rooster with protected geographical indication, and desserts such as catànies (almonds coated with different types of chocolate), all washed down with DO Penedès wines.

Accommodation

There are plenty of places to stay too.

You can choose between the hotels, the tourist apartments and the farmhouses around Vilafranca del Penedès. And if you want to come in sustainable transport, don’t forget that the train stops in our town.
