Sunset visits to the bell tower

On summer Saturdays, don't miss the sunset visit to the Santa Maria bell tower!

The bell tower of the Basilica of Santa Maria, offers the possibility of being visited every summer Saturday and enjoying the sunset.

At the beginning of the 14th century a monk called Sagio began to ring the bells for the first time. Since then, the sound of bells has announced religious and civil events and the profile of the tower has become the symbol of the city.

Guided tour that begins with a general explanation of the church of Santa Maria and its unique elements of the faced. The visit continues at the entrance of the bell tower and through a spiral staircase the visitor can reach the room of the weather vane, represented as an angel. In this room visitors can see a big clapper known as les Tenebres (darkness). Along the stairs is situated the cell of monks who were able to ring more than twenty-seven different sounds announcing religious and social events. In this room is situated a clock worked by gears, dated from 1929 and recently restored.

At the fifth floor there are the religious bells called Josepha, Michaela, Assumpta and Montserrat and continuing until the top terrace at 52 m high, visitors can contemplate one of the most beautiful views of Vilafranca and the Penedès landscape, while tasting a fresh glass of white wine, courtesy of the wineries of Vilafranca.
