Vilafranca's wineries
During the 18th and 19th centuries, both wine production and the economy grew, a situation that would last until the onset of the phylloxera crisis at the end of the 19th century.
In 1903 an oenological centre was opened in Vilafranca and in 1960 the Regulatory Commission of the Denomination of Origin Penedès was set up. This provided the impetus needed to modernise the sector and increase wine production. At present the Penedès wine sector is highly qualified and exports its products around the world.
