Evidence retrieved from an archaeological site dating from the 7th century BC suggests that the Penedès was the first place in Catalonia to produce wine. Phoenicians, Iberians, Greeks and Romans were the first to plant vines in this area.
The Roman domination of Catalonia favoured the growth of vineyards and the production of red and white wines. Over the 9th, 10th and 11th centuries, as Christians reconquered Moorish territories in Catalonia, the number of vineyards increased and in the subsequent three centuries growth was spectacular. Monasteries were at the head of oenological science, and new improved wines replaced original ones.
